"My sister and I are home-educated and when we moved here from the Fiji Islands, my parents started looking for healthy activities and organizations for us to get involved with. Gen J has been a terrific encouragement for all of us to stand up for truth and be informed.

I wanted to enter the contest because I love to write and try to take every opportunity to improve my writing skills. My grandmother, who is a published author, always taught my mom that a good writer writes what she knows. Melba Pattillo has been one of my heroes since I was 6 years old…I even have a magazine clipping from Life magazine that has the famous photo of the kids going to school that day.

Every day, I hear people put our country down and mock our nation’s values. People like Melba Pattillo made our country a better place to live and I wanted to remind people that while America is not perfect, we are the greatest nation on earth. I wanted them to remember that freedom costs us something and that people have made and are making sacrifices so we can live freely."
